Safety Guidelines for Rebar Processing on Site
Rebar processing equipment brings speed and consistency to construction sites, but it also introduces serious hazards. Every year, injuries occur because operators bypass guards, work without gloves, or ignore electrical grounding. For fabrication plants and contractors using CNC rebar benders, stirrup machines, or hydraulic shearing lines, safety is not optional—it is a productivity tool. A safe workshop runs without downtime, protects your team, and keeps projects on schedule. Below are the essential safety guidelines that every rebar processing site should enforce, based on international best practices and the design principles behind Gongda machinery.
Guards and Protective Covers: Your First Line of Defense
Moving blades, bending discs, and hydraulic rams can crush or sever fingers in an instant. That is why every Gongda machine, such as the GQ70A rebar cutting machine and the GJZD6-65CZ CNC rebar bending machine, is delivered with fixed guards and safety covers. Never remove these guards for convenience. If a guard must be opened for maintenance, lock out the power source first. For the GDQX-500 hydraulic shearing production line, the entry and exit zones are especially dangerous. Install additional light curtains or physical barriers around the feed area if your site layout allows. Always check that guards are in place before starting a shift. A missing bolt or a bent cover is a red flag—stop work and repair it immediately.
Hand Protection and Safe Work Practices
Your hands are your most valuable tools. When feeding rebar into a cutting machine or positioning a bar on a bending table, keep hands at least 15 cm away from the moving parts. Use push sticks or positioning guides for short bars. Never attempt to clear jams while the machine is running. For the GJZD6-65CZ, which bends A3 steel up to 65 mm, the working table is 550 mm wide—use that space to stage bars so you are not reaching across the bending disc. Gloves are essential, but choose cut-resistant gloves that still allow dexterity. Loose-fitting gloves can get caught in rotating parts, so cuffs should be snug. Also, never wear rings, bracelets, or dangling sleeves. Long hair must be tied back. These rules apply to every operator, from the most experienced to the newest hire.
Electrical Safety and Proper Grounding
Rebar processing machines draw high current, especially hydraulic models like the GDQX-500. Ensure that every machine is connected to a properly grounded outlet that matches its voltage and phase requirements. Inspect power cords and plugs for cuts or fraying before each use. Never use extension cords as a permanent solution—they are a trip hazard and can overheat. If you operate in a damp environment, use a residual current device (RCD) to protect against electric shock. Also, keep the area around the electrical cabinet dry and clear of metal dust. For machines with control panels, like the CNC rebar bending machine, make sure the emergency stop button is easily accessible and tested weekly. If you notice any sparking, unusual heat, or a tripped breaker, stop using the machine and call a qualified electrician.
Operator Training and the Danger Zone
Even the safest machine is only as safe as its operator. Provide formal training for every new employee, covering not just how to run the machine but also how to recognize hazards. For shearing lines, the danger zone extends beyond the blade—it includes the area where cut bars might eject. Keep a clear zone of at least one meter around the machine, and mark it with floor tape. For CNC benders, the programming station should be away from the bending head. Only one person should operate the machine at a time; others must stand outside the marked zone. Regular refresher sessions every six months help maintain vigilance. Also, post safety signs in the local language and in English if your crew is multinational.
