Rebar Machines for Road and Highway Projects
Rebar Machines for Road and Highway Projects: Matching Equipment to Barriers, Culverts, Box Girders and Drainage
Road and highway construction consumes rebar in forms that differ sharply from high-rise building work. Barriers, culverts, box girders and drainage structures each impose their own bar diameters, bend geometries and production volumes. Choosing the wrong machine mix slows the casting yard, inflates labor, and creates rework at the formwork. This guide maps the actual rebar tasks in highway packages to specific machine types and models, based on the Gongda range manufactured by China Rebar Machinery in Hefei, Anhui.
1. Concrete Barriers and Parapets
Jersey barriers and bridge parapets use dense, repetitive stirrup cages with tight bend radii. The work is high-volume and geometry-driven, so a CNC stirrup bender is the core machine.
- GW25 CNC single-head stirrup bender — handles round steel up to 25mm. Suitable for standard barrier hoops and link bars where one bend sequence per bar is enough.
- ZD-6M-25 and ZD-6M-20 five-head stirrup machines — 25mm and 20mm capacity respectively. Five-head configuration lets you produce several stirrup sizes in one pass, which matters when a project mixes barrier types along a corridor.
- GJZD6-50CZ CNC bending machine — up to 50mm with a 420mm working table. Use it for heavier anchorage bends and base connection bars in barrier-to-deck details.
Practical note: barrier cages are usually tied off-site or in a casting yard. If your schedule requires hundreds of identical hoops per day, the five-head machines (ZD-6M series) will outperform a single-head bender on throughput per operator.
2. Culverts and Box Structures
Box culverts and retaining structures combine large-diameter main bars with closely spaced distribution steel. Both cutting and bending capacity become bottlenecks.
Cutting
- GQ70A cutting machine — cuts up to 70mm with 160-ton shear force. Appropriate for heavy culvert main reinforcement.
- GQ50A cutting machine — 6–50mm round and 6–36mm ribbed. The general-purpose unit for most culvert bar sizes.
- GDQX-500 hydraulic rebar shearing production line — for projects where cut-to-length volume justifies a continuous line rather than batch cutting.
Bending
- GJZD6-65CZ CNC bending machine — up to 65mm. Handles the largest culvert bar diameters in the Gongda range.
- GDLWZX-32 vertical bending center — 32mm. Vertical orientation saves floor space and suits tall, closed hoops.
- GDPMW-60 plane bending center — 60mm. Plane configuration is faster for flat, open-shaped bars such as culvert wall links.
For culvert work, pair a GQ70A or GQ50A with a GJZD6-65CZ. This combination covers the full diameter spread without moving bars between multiple machines.
3. Box Girders and Bridge Decks
Box girder reinforcement includes long straight bars, large-radius bends, and curved bars for haunches and diaphragms. Straight-line accuracy and controlled bend radius are the quality drivers.
- YGT4-15A straightening & cutting machine — 4–15mm with variable frequency drive (VFD). VFD control gives consistent feed speed, which reduces length tolerance drift on long runs.
- SKDZWH-36 and GDWHWQ-36 CNC arc benders — 36mm capacity. These produce the smooth, large-radius arcs used in curved deck sections and diaphragm transitions.
- GWH50CG and GWH50CZN arc bending machines — 50mm. For heavier curved bars in pier caps and thick deck zones.
- GD-350ZD band saw — 350mm. Clean cuts on large sections where shear cutting would deform the bar end.
Arc benders are frequently overlooked on highway projects. If your drawings specify radiused bars rather than sharp bends, a standard bender will not reproduce the geometry accurately. Budget for a dedicated arc bender early.
4. Drainage Structures and Ancillary Works
Drainage inverts, headwalls, manholes and kerb-related steel involve smaller diameters but high bar counts. Speed and consistency matter more than raw capacity.
- ZD-6M-20 five-head stirrup machine — 20mm. Well matched to manhole hoops and small drainage links.
- GW25 CNC single-head stirrup bender — 25mm. Flexible for mixed drainage cage sizes.
- HGS-40 thread rolling machine — 40mm. Use for mechanical couplers in drainage walls where lap lengths are restricted.
- ZDTHJ-12 automatic spring making machine — 12mm. Produces helical reinforcement for spiral drainage and pile-related elements.
5. Fabrication Support Equipment
Two additional machine types keep a highway rebar yard self-sufficient:
- NB-350 and NB-500 MIG/CO2 welders — for cage stiffeners, lifting frames, and site repairs. The NB-500 covers thicker sections and longer duty cycles.
- HGS-40 thread rolling machine — beyond drainage, it supports coupler systems in barriers and deck joints where continuous reinforcement is specified.
Selection Checklist for Highway Projects
- List every bar diameter on the drawings, then confirm your largest bender and cutter cover it with margin.
- Separate sharp-bend work from radiused work — arc benders are a distinct purchase.
- Estimate daily hoop and stirrup counts; if they exceed a few hundred, specify a multi-head stirrup machine.
- Confirm cutting volume before choosing between batch cutting machines and a shearing production line.
- Check certification requirements early. Gongda equipment can be supplied with EAC certification, which matters for projects in Russia and Eurasian Economic Union markets.
